Kaland workshop

In short

Kaland workshops are movement sessions built around different themes, led by our facilitators. They can be a few hours long or multi-day deep dives. They are usually site-specific and, through physicality, invite you to discover, play and learn in a space — a forest, a city, a village, indoors, anywhere.

In more detail

How can you move with another person? With an object? With a tree? With a space? What happens when we change the rules, the habitual movements, or the way we relate to our surroundings?

Over the past years we have developed a wealth of tools, scores and games that help us connect to our bodies, to nature, to the city and to each other — while reclaiming the freedom of discovery and play.

With these tools we take people on an adventure: through movement tasks, games and different situations of discovery we invite them to use their bodies, the space and their relationships differently.

Our workshops are known for a joyful, playful atmosphere and an alternation of high energy and deep focus. Active attention to one another, cooperation and helping each other are essential, while improvisation and practice keep blending.

Workshops can be one- or two-hour sessions, or multi-day immersions. We organise our own workshops and also work on invitation at festivals, cultural venues and in various communities.

Questions we often get

What people ask.

Do I need to be sporty?

No. Kaland workshops are not built on technical skill or prior experience. Curiosity matters far more.

What will I learn in a workshop?

You get to know different movement tools, games and methods. You learn about your body, movement, improvisation and how to connect with others and your surroundings. Learning here also means experiencing yourself and the world around you in new ways.

Is a workshop physically demanding?

It can be, if you want to push your own limits, but that is not the goal. Kaland is not performance-driven; it supports curiosity, play and discovering your own body. Everyone takes part at their own pace and within their own possibilities.

How long is a workshop?

It can be a short one-hour session, or a process of several hours or days.

Do you always do the same tasks?

No. We work from our own toolbox, scores and games, but always adapt them to the group, the place and the focus.

Can the workshop have its own focus or theme?

Yes. The focus can be connection, improvisation, contact, exploring nature or the urban environment, working with a particular Kaland tool — or anything else that interests the group.

Can I come alone, or only with others?

Of course, come alone or with friends. During the workshop we work and connect together anyway.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes suited to the season and the venue, in which you can move freely. If the environment calls for something specific, we let you know in advance. Closed shoes are usually recommended.

Can I book a workshop for my own community?

Yes. Besides our own workshops we can be invited to festivals, institutions, communities and events. We shape the workshop to the venue, the group and your needs.

Do you only hold workshops in Budapest?

No. We hold workshops wherever we are invited and wherever we are happy to travel. The place is an important part of the Kaland: we love to be inspired by and explore new environments.
